KHALSA (PART – 4) WHAT WAS NEED FOR FOUNDING SIKHISM
ੴ
SATNAAM SHRI WAHEGURU
KHALSA - THE PIOUS FRACTION OF THE UNIVERSE
(PART – 4)
WHAT WAS NEED FOR FOUNDING SIKHISM
I have
noticed that the persons who totally believe in their Guru ji, Here I am
talking of every religion and follow the rituals of their family are totally
healthy, happy and successful. They are totally dedicated to the God or supreme
power they possess. They are happy, calm and contended in every phase of their
life. Then, they need not to go to any astrologer or we can say any priest to
ask about happenings, misfortune or sorrows taking place in their life.
As God has
not blessed anyone with a smooth life, ups and downs keep on coming in one’s
life but our faith makes our life easier. I have
already mentioned that our pure dedication and total surrender to our supreme
power make our life easier.
As all my
these blogs are dedicated to my GURU JI, GURU NANAK DEV JI, so I am writing
about how he has given solution to every problem in form of rituals or REHAT
MARYADA (daily routines to follow).Who ever follows them religiously become one
with his guru and God(the supreme power) then he is never in pain as faith in
guru gives you everything which is good for you, on your path of life. Faith
develops patience against problems.
Before
taking up how following our rituals we develop immunity and are blessed in
terms of health, Wealth and happiness along with other materialistic things. I
would like to take up simple questions and answer them, which I have read on
social media, while reading the literatures.
I have read
at many places why did Guru Nanak Dev Ji feel the need of creating another
religion? He could have worked on the betterment of traditions of
Hinduism!!!!!!!
To these questions my mind has lot of
answers, I will try to answer as far as I have knowledge....
Hinduism is the oldest religion of Hindustan.
Guru Nanak dev ji was also born in a hindu family, But founded Sikhism in the
15th century. Both religions share many philosophical concepts such
as KARMA, DHARMA, MUKTI, MAYA AND
SANSKARA.
GURU JI got disturbed with the divisions in caste
system; he wanted the equality in humanity. Secondly, the attitude of priests
was disturbing him a lot. Here i would like to add, not everyone misguide the innocent people, but due to
selfish interests sometimes some priests will tell people about misfortune and
scare people for the sake of selfish motives, which should not be there in any
religion, but to my surprise it is still prevailing.
Further going against the rituals and
traditions is difficult as beliefs and rituals become deep rooted in people, so
it is difficult to detach someone from its roots. It is easy to start something
new and open it to everyone, whoever has belief in the new system can join it.
We can never force anyone to go against his wishes. So,
GURU JI paved a path where everyone or the likeminded people had an open choice
whether to follow or not. Nanak Ji travelled far and wide teaching people the
message of one God who dwells in every one of his creations and constitutes the
eternal Truth. He had set up a unique spiritual, social, and political platform
based on equality, fraternal love, goodness, and virtue.
Nanak's words are registered in the form of
974 poetic hymns in the holy text of Sikhism, the Guru Granth Sahib, with some
of the major prayers being the Japji Sahib, the Asa di Var and the Sidh-Gosht.
It is part of Sikh religious belief that the spirit of Nanak's sanctity,
divinity and religious authority descended upon each of the nine subsequent
Gurus when the Guruship was devolved on to them.
Another
question I read is why Guru Nank Guru Nanak’S
two sons Shri Chand and Lakhmi Chand were named after goddess laxmi and shri
!!!!
As I already said it is easy to change
oneself rather than changing the entire family. For example I can do what I
like, but I cannot change my father, my mother, my brothers, sisters or cousins
or friends, they will do whatever they like. They can agree to me at a later
stage but initially if i am starting something fresh, they will have a doubt about
it. As a new venture has to cross lots of odd situations and oppositions.
Above all whole of the family cannot be
detached from the basic rituals and traditions at once, as rituals are deep
rooted in every person, as we start following them since we are born.It takes
lot of time to change the mindset and go through a change. We have seen in so
many cases son or daughter of that family do not follow the traditions of that
family and it upset the whole family.
It is difficult to change customs in the
family. Actually all Sikh’s ancestors were Hindus, so one cannot take customs
out of genes, it takes time for the transformation of genes, as when our
thought process changes continuously , only then the genes goes through
transformation, taking a long time for the process.
Also SINGH was added to the names after
establishment of KHALSA . So, they had the names which were in routine in those
days. Shri Chand received enlightenment from Nanak's teachings and went on to
become the founder of the udasi sect.
GURU JI’S main motive was to teach and to
aware people the values of Karma, the good deeds and teachings, guided people
to connect to God themselves rather that going through priests, he taught that
one can pray directly to his beloved God, he do not need any intermediate
person to connect to God. So, he gave practical approach to pray to God. God is
a supreme power of universe with no color, cast or form, we can connect to him
by just our mind. The purpose of founding Sikhism was to give the world a
unique and different civilisation, free from heavy customs .In doing so, A Sikh
had to have compassion, kindness, mercy, forgiveness and love.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji was a social reformer,
preacher. He preached message of love, humanity and taught Hindus and Muslims
to love each other.
It is written in Gurbani ‘Kal Taaran Guru
Nanak Aaya’ so the message is clear Guru Nanak came to make people rid of
darkness and spread light. Other verse is in this Dark Age, he showed all gods
to be just one. The four feet of Dharma, the four castes were converted into
one. Equality of the King and beggar, he spread the custom of being humble. Reversed
is the game of the beloved; the egoist high heads bowed to the feet. He had a simple message of sharing and
equality. They would help poor and underprivileged people by serving Langar or
needy things, It was the following gurus, especially the fifth and then the
tenth that really started formalising into a religion. It has only been a
formalised religion in its present state for about 350 years.
Guru ji moved on to enlighten people and he
remained on this till he completed this mission in 1708. It was Guru Gobind Singh ji who gave the name
“Khalsa”(Once a person initiates into the Khalsa (Sikh Baptism) it is said that
they no longer belong to any caste) and other followers a commom name Sikh. Sikhism
treats all people equally and founds systems such as Langar and Pangat to help play this out in daily life.
“Oankar
('the Primal Sound') created Brahma, Oankar fashioned the consciousness,
from Oankar
came mountains and ages, Oankar produced the Vedas,
By the grace
of Oankar, people were saved through the divine word,
By the grace
of Oankar, they were liberated through the teachings of the Guru”
Ramakali
Dakkhani, Adi Granth 929-930, Translated by Pashaura Singh[16]
FOLLOWING THREE PILLARS OF SIKHISM:
NAAM JAPNA, KIRAT KARNI AND VAND
CHAKHNA
CHAKHNA
Can lead one to the salvation ...
NAAM JAPNA :
It is to
keep on reciting the name of god. When somebody continuously recites the name
of God, he is in regular communion with the Lord. In Sikhism, everything is
connected with the name of God. There is no formality or method to be followed
properly for chanting. One can take the
Name while being in office, sitting in Gurudwara, eating, bathing, in
congregation of holy saints or in private meditation. Only condition is that it should not be a
formality, it should come directly from your heart and with deep concentration
recite the name of God. Contemplation in solitude is as important as being in
crowd.
When we
chant or recite the holy name of god, the supreme power and we continue the
process daily, one can feel each cell the basic unit of the body start reciting
the mantra on his own. Which activates every cell and align them to be healthy.
I am explaining the whole process separately, in next blog.
KIRAT KARNI :
Kirat karni
is earning one’s livelihood with honest labour, without any misdeed or cheating
the humanity. Kirat is the concept of service (seva) . Stories of Guru ji (Janamsakhi) tells us that
the Guru Ji preferred a coarse meal earned through hard labour than a sumptuous
meal at a wealthy zamindar’s palace.
VAND CHAKHNA:
Vand chakhna
is best explained as ‘sharing is caring’. On one occasion, when Guru Nanak was
with his two sons and Lehna (Guru Angad Dev), were present. There lied a corpse covered with
cloth. He asked who will eat this,
nobody responded, but Lehna, having full faith in his Master, accepted it and
when he removed the cloth, he saw there was a tray full of sacred food, which
he served to his master and ate the leftovers.
On this,
Guru Nanak said, “Lehna, you were blessed with sacred food because you shared
it. Similarly, people should use wealth not only for themselves but share it
with others. If one consumes it only for himself then it is like a corpse. But
when we share it with others, it becomes sacred.” This constitutes the basis of
langar, community kitchen, and dasvandh, sharing one-tenth of one’s earnings
with the community.
These have
become the basics of Sikhism. He who follows these is a true sikh in real sense
and he is well on his way to realising the potential and purpose of his life.
GURU JI BLESS EVERYONE..
